Valentine’s Day Candy Heart Math!

Egg cartons are so great for math activities!

They allow for so many variations of sorting and classifying while requiring their little fine motor muscles to get a good workout!

My hubby came home with this beauty of an egg carton, and it was meant to be 😀

I bought a bag of candy hearts from the dollar tree and painted the insides of the egg carton to match the candy heart colors.

Using a permanent marker, I labeled each spot for how many hearts should go in…

…and added the matching number and color of hearts!

There are so many different ways to use this!

We started out by practicing naming the colors we saw…

…then took out the hearts, named their colors, and tried to find their color match!

Then we went through each row and counted!

You can also start from an empty carton and the bag of hearts, have them separate by color, then add back the hearts by number!

There are endless variations of this activity and so many math concepts are included! Every time they sort by color or number, make comparisons, categorize, and recognize patterns, they are using math!

Just a tip – have extras on hand, because playing with candy for that long and not eating some is a skill few have acquired (parents included – you know who you are 😉 lol)

Happy counting!
