I like this painting activity, because it’s an easy clean up and each creation comes out completely unique!
It also gives an opportunity for the kiddos to practice the word “roll” which even as an adult I have concluded is such a strange word in my mouth lol
Here’s how I did it:
First I wrapped the rolling pin in plastic wrap (I’ve also seen this done with aluminum foil).
P.S. – a rolling pin is a simple machine because it uses wheels and axels! Hooray STEM component!
Then I gathered every foam heart sticker I could find in my random collection (and a couple stars because, you know, lucky charms :D) and arranged them to make shamrocks!
I made some with three and one with four (to later be able to search for the 4-leaf clover!).
Make sure when you are placing the stickers that you are aware that placement matters! If there are any stickers that overlap in the direction it rolls, then those will always paint over each other and the picture won’t be as clear – the kiddos are already going to roll this thing multiple times over what they’ve painted so having overlapping stickers would just add to it.
Add some paint to the stickers (easier than having a giant paint tray to put the roller in AND will work their fine motor skills in the process as they hold and control the paint brush!)
and rooooooooooolllllllllll away!
Whenever I use an object to paint, I always use an action word every time they use the object – in other words every brush stroke: “brush, brush, brush!”, sponge pat: “pat, pat, pat”, dot marker dot: “dot, dot, dot”, etc.
With this, every time they roll it, I say “roll”. I do this to re-enforce that each action also has a word! This is just one of the many simple ways to encourage language development!
Here he goes!
“Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr….”
“ooooooooooollllllll”
Great job buddy 😀
TADA!
This can simply go on the wall, draw stems and number the leaves to do counting activities or hunt for the 4-leaf clovers, or it could be used as a background for other St. Patty’s Day crafts!
